HB17 comes from British artist Mark Harris. Originally coming from a visual arts background, Mark has always had a keen interest in systems and generative processes, whether it be in art or music. He has developed several software applications allowing him to work through these processes, forming a live and improvised performance. His source-sound stock ranges from treated instrument samples to field recordings, which is then designed into a gradually evolving and immersive sound environment intended to evoke a strong emotional response amongst the listener.
Other recent projects by Mark Harris include 'Birmingham Sound
Matter', a project that was instigated by renowned Spanish sound
artist Francisco Lopez and includes an additional six other sound
artists working in the West Midlands, UK. This later resulted in both a concert performance and CD release. Working as part of Birmingham's AV collective Modulate, Mark collaborated in the Modulate 5.1 DVD release that was made using surround sound and collaborative audio visual compositions.
Here on Hibernate with "The Boy Observes the Ocean", you can
experience Mark Harris' talented soundscaping process for yourself
throughout this stunning and thoroughly immersive album. He has used samples sourced from bowed guitar, saxophone and violin performances by his acquaintances and treated them, before using his custom software applications to reshape the tone into the immersive listen that he set out to craft. Additional field recordings that are also worked into his live mix, add a narrative and some extra character to this beautiful and rounded album.
